Sport is great isn't it! It thrills us. It depresses us. It motivates us. It creates amazing memories that we will remember our whole lives!
But there is one thing that sport will never do. Sport will never save us.
Let me tell you about God and what he has to do with sport.
You see we were created to be in a perfect relationship with God. But something in this world has stopped that, our sin. Sin is when we say to God "no, I am doing it my way, not yours".
We all know that we have done that at least once in our lives, probably even while being involved in our sport.
Now God's standard requires that we are perfect in order to be in relationship with him, a relationship we all knowingly or unknowingly desire, but we don't reach that requirement of perfection because of our sin, and thus deserve punishment. Punishment for sin is death! Not death in this life, but eternity spent separated from God in hell.
But God loves us so much that he wants to be in perfect relationship with us. He is a just god though, so must deal with our sin. To do that he sends Jesus, his own son who himself is God. And he dies. He dies a death of crucifixion with the face of his father turned away from him. He didn't have to. He really didn't want to, but he did because he loves us.
It's like your batting with Michael Clarke in a local cricket match. You go out to bat together and you face the first ball. It's full and you play a terrible shot that ends with you getting caught at first slip. You are about to walk off and Clarky walks up to you and says "I'll take it mate", and he walks off and takes your wicket, enabling you to bat on.
What Jesus does is even more amazing! He humbles himself to become a human, then he dies purely for us, even though he knows that people will reject him again and again. Jesus sees our sin and knows that we deserve death because of it, but he says "I'll take it mate".
Enabling us to live a life free of guilt and shame, knowing that we are going to heaven with Jesus one day.
It is amazing that Jesus would do that for us. It is amazing that he loves us that much!
Jesus has made the way for us to live. Do you believe it? In the bible it says if you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that
Jesus is Lord you will be saved.
Being saved from our sins is a free gift from God. All we have to do is except it and trust that Jesus death on the cross was enough to take our sin away. It is the most important decision of your life. Do you want that? Do you want to be free from sin? Do you want to be in relationship with God, the creator of the universe?
Ask him for forgiveness, and tell him you're sorry. Then ask him for help to trust in Jesus.
Because of what God has done for us, we Christians honour him in everything we do. It's not something we have to do, but it's something we want to do. The way we honour God is by saying "yes, I am doing it your way, not mine". That's the way we want to participate in sport. We want to participate in Sport, God's Way.
If you want to know more about God read the Bible. Start in the New Testament at Matthew. Also let us know that you want to know more and we will help you do that.
